Paul Jobson Keyboards / Vocals Latest News http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/ http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=51 http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=51 June and July
So June and July have flown past. The Geoff Achison tour was cool. Nine days of shows and laughs. The only spanner in the works was when we were driving from Carlisle to Crawley. We got within 30 miles of the final gig on the last day of the tour and the van went Kaput. We still fixed the situation so that Geoff could do a solo set on time whilst we wait for the low - loader to get us there a bit later. Many thanks to Wendy Auld for picking him up. We all played a stormer in the end.

I went with Cymande II to play an sold out show in paris. I have never seen so much love for a band in one room before. We also played Mostly Jazz festival in Birmingham and Sam Kelly and Jimmy Lyndsay held a q&a session after, which I learned a lot from.
Every show we play, we are pleasantly astonished at how much support Cymande still gets 30 years on. Apparently in some cases more so now. I wasn't there first time around, but I'm really happy for all the original members of 'Cymande' in the fact that their music is still very close to peoples hearts and is still being celebrated.

Moving onto July......

My band "Cut The Funck" played the main stage at "Lounge On The Farm" music festival. Getting the gig was pure fluke, We stepped up though, and pulled it off. ... http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=50 http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=50 Cut the Funck...My new band!!! Right, Well sorry about the lack of contact. The last two months have just been stupid busy with things to do.

One reason I have less time is because I have started work on my new album with my new band: "Cut the Funck". I have wanted to do an album for years, however, I have never felt that I was "ready" enough. In my eyes, doing an album when you've just started gigging doesn't seem like a good idea. Yes, I agree that there are exceptions to this rule. There are plenty of bands that seem to get it right first time. It's not just the recording / gigging though; Looking after the guys around you, musical direction, people management etc are all the parts of it that some people don't like to talk about or pay much respect to. It's serious stuff and once it's out, it's out. That is why I have waited so long!

I have had a chance to learn and watch what others do over the last ten years when I've recorded with them. Some have been great, and some have been what can only be described as shysters but, either way, I've learnt some really valuable lessons. I hope it pays off.

Before i tell you what I was going to tell you, I'd better tell you about this :-s

I may have mentioned in earlier posts about a certain character who goes by the name of Geoff Achison. Well, due to popular demand and his overwhelming love for British service station food, he will be back THIS MONTH for a brief 10 day tour. Geoff and The UK Souldiggers (Sam Kelly (dr), Spy (b) and me) will be playing the following dates:

17/06/2010 9:00 PM
Venue: High Barn
Address: 28 Bardfield Cent... http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=48 http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=48 News update April 2010 Hello all,

So much to tell you! Where do i start?

Cymande II is going on the road. I couldn't be happier for everyone as so much effort has gone into this to make it work. I have never written out so many parts for people and it feels good to know i can actually do it. So a small personal victory for me. The first show is on Saturday 15th May at the Bloomsbury Ballroom in London. I just can't wait! And....AND... There is a Mark Lamarr BBC Radio 2 Session coming up...... Check out the myspace page for more information on gigs. There is also a facebook page here

Geoff Achison is coming back in June and I am proud, nay, privileged to be wearing the UK Souldiggin' badge again. Dates of Geoff's tour can be found here. There will be new songs and everything!

Britain’s most talked about and exciting contemporary Blues guitarist. Taking his cue from the great American blues guitarists and mixing it with rock and funk influences, Schofield has developed a distinctive style that has had the music media here and in the USA singing his praises. The Los Angeles Daily News was emphatic when saying “in Schofield, the UK has produced the best blues guitarist from any country in decades.” His powerful mix of Blues and New Orleans funk is unlike anything else on the block.

Britain has a long history of producing influential guitarists – Eric Clapton and Peter Green to name just two. Schofield recently joined the list when Guitar & Bass Magazine added him to their Top Ten Greatest British Bluesmen of All Time. Support by The Mavericks Blues Band.

Hey folks,

I hope you all had a very good christmas and new year. The snow has been nice but it's halted almost everything, gigs included.

I must, quickly, say a very big thank you to all those who sent well wishes during my brief stint in hospital last year. They were very much appreciated.

So anyways, you may have noticed the new Roland logo on my website. I am very proud to be an endorsee for their Keyboard products. Many thanks to the Roland team and special thanks to Lisa Lewis and Jerome Marcus for making this happen. They have a great range of products. To take a look, Visit their website.

http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=28 http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=28 Review From Blues in the Northwest Following two very successful years in the United States, Geoff Achison is now resident back in his native Australia. After such a long absence, his return to the UK on an extensive tour has generated considerable excitement and anticipation. It was no surprise, therefore, that the Marina was packed to the gunnels in eager expectation.

The party began with a solo acoustic set from Geoff, opening with the fast-moving “Whipping Post”, followed by “Apparatus”, a song that bemoaned the relentless charge of automation, with clever machine-like sounds played on guitar. The set was completed with a duo of Taj Mahal numbers and a superb, energetic version of “Superstition”.

Geoff then introduced The UK Souldiggers: Sam Kelly on drums, Spy on bass guitar and Paul Jobson on keyboards. The upbeat shuffle, “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know”, led into a funky performance of Muddy Waters’s “Sugar Sweet”, with Spy excelling on slap bass and Paul Jobson delivering a terrific solo. The funky mood was maintained with the excellent ballad, “Crazy Horse” and the upbeat “Rule The World” that featured a brilliant guitar solo. The set was drawn to a conclusion with a funky blues number about the persistent menace of plastic bags. ... http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=27 http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=27 September 2009 and Geoff Achison Tour! Hi there,

Just updated the gigs page and have put "Souldigger" dates for Geoff Achison's tour which starts at the end of this month. We will be near those of you in the UK at some point or another so there is no excuse not to be at one of the gigs.......yes, you as well! This man has won awards for what he does, and it has to be seen to be believed.

The Times said about Geoff "A technique verging on the miraculous."

Geoff will be promoting his critically acclaimed new album, "One Ticket One Ride"

The Souldigger dates are:

Former members Sam Kelly and Jimmy Lindsay performed on stage and original members Patrick Patterson and Steve Scipio attended the event.
Cymande became popular in the early 70’s with their own brand of sophisticated and eclectic mix of deep funk. Their music incorporated the rhythms of calypso and jazz fused with African music, American soul and British rock.
This unique collective of West Indian musicians was accidentally discovered in a Soho London Club by British producer John Schroeder who shortly had the band signed leading to the recording of their first single ‘The Message’ also used in Spike Lee’s cult movie epic 25th Hour. Schroeder went on to produce hits like ‘Brothers On The Slide’, ‘Bra’, ‘Fug’, ‘The Recluse’ and many more.
Singer Jimmy Lindsay joined them for their ‘Promised Heights’ album but in 1974 the group disbanded. Their infectious rhythms attracted break beate... http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=25 http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=25 Update Just to let you know that new gigs have been added to the website. It has been a mad couple of months really. There is lots of fun going on musically, some I can talk about and some....er well I have to wait for a bit. All will be revealed soon-ish so watch this space.

What I can say though is that I've been doing a fair amount of work with Dudley Ross. Dudley is a very fine guitarist from Canterbury and he has an album out. Go and check him out. Nice guy too. I Also finally got to work with the fine bassist that is Roger Innis. We've been bumping into each other at festivals for years and we had said we should work together sooner rather than later. I like it when a plan comes together

It's amazing how something surreal, weird or surprising can come from such an unsuspecting gig. Me and the aforementioned Mr Ross were playing at a wedding last Saturday and there was a really cool vibe in the room. What made this unusually uber cool was the fact that the legend that is Mr Jeff Beck just so happened to be there. One of my favourite albums is... http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=24 http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=24 Geoff Achison U.K Tour 2009 The wait is almost over folks. ... http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=21 http://www.pauljobson.co.uk/pages/newsart.php?id=21 Review From Guisborough Blues Festival The longer tea-time break helped disperse some of the impact of Connie's dynamite performance so by the time Sam Kelly's Station House (Paul Jobson, keys, voc; Spy, bass, voc; and new singer-guitarist Tony Qunta) entered the fray the crowd was re-energised. So far each band had put their own stamp of humour on the festival and Sam and his merry men were the happiest of all. Their light hearted clowning and banter belying staggering musicianship.

TThe funky opener 'Put Myself Back Together' with Tony on vocals, saw all four musicians in jaw dropping solos that left the mouth watering for what was yet to come. Then, 'I'm On Your Side', initially a swinging jazz number, with Spy scatting the mic, segued into The Yellowjackets 'Revelation' Tony's guitar in overdrive, before making a brief trip to Jamaica and back.

The legendary music venue was packed for the debut of the new line-up of Station House.
the band was created to host the regular session at the Station Tavern, in Bramley Road London W10, on Sunday afternoons. Drummer Sam Kelly is the only constant. Bass player and singer Spy is the second longest serving member followed by keyboard and singer Paul Jobson. Now Tony Qunta has replaced T.J.Johnson on guitar and Jerome Marcus has stepped up on percussion, following in the footsteps of Root Jackson.
The music was full on funk, whatever the song, and inevitably very percussive. After the instrumental "Revelation" Spy led the vocals on several numbers: "Treat a dog", "More than one way home" and "Bad is Bad". Then he sang "Use Me" and the excellent "People say" with Paul, the others providing backing vocals as required. I Went to play drums at The Cavern Club, Liverpool with Scott Brunger Band yesterday (Tuesday). This was part of the International Pop Overthrow Festival. The band did two sets, one in the bar and one in the club. We had the most amazing time.

Talking of festivals I, with Sam Kelly's Station House, Played keys at the Black Horse Festival, Hastings last Friday. This was an amazing gig. and you can find some footage of it on youtube. Saturday afternoon I went to Essex for a Primo Blues gig with special guest Val Hayes. That same band will be playing Boogaloo Blues Weekend at Lakeside, Hayling Island on Saturday 30th May. So Sunday I Guested with a Party Band Called "Pheonix" in Broadstairs....Actually Sunday was the day for Party gigs, then went to the Boogie band gig in the evening. Mad to think that "The Fabulous Boogie Band" has been together for ten years. Monday Was a rare gig with Jimmy Lindsay Celebrating the Music of Cymande. This gig was awesome, even though i fell off stage and twisted my ankle. Doh!
